Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary function of a steam separator in a pipeline?

A steam separator removes entrained water droplets and moisture from the steam flow. By separating the liquid water from the gas phase, it delivers high-dryness steam to heat exchangers and turbines, preventing energy losses.

How does a steam separator prevent water hammer?

Water hammer is caused by slugs of condensate traveling at high speeds inside steam pipes. The separator intercepts and traps this liquid condensate before it can pool, safely draining it away through an attached steam trap.

What is the difference between baffle-type and cyclone-type separators?

Baffle-type separators use internal plates to change flow direction, causing water droplets to strike the walls and drop out. Cyclone-type separators utilize centrifugal force by spinning the steam, throwing the heavier water droplets outward.

Does a steam separator require an external trap to be installed?

Yes. While the separator successfully isolates the moisture from the steam, it must be equipped with a high-capacity steam trap (typically a ball float type) at its bottom drain connection to continuously discharge the collected condensate.

Can these separators be customized for specific line sizes and pressures?

Yes, we provide fully customized steam separators. Our technical department can design units with tailored flange connections, different materials (carbon steel or stainless steel), and custom pressure ratings to match your plant's exact blueprint.
